Why People Should Read Books

The history of books started with the development of writing, and other inventions, such as papers and printing. With the evolution of technology, handwritten books are replaced with printed books. This causes an easier distribution of books and now every person can have a book or more in their collection. However due to technology that keeps progressing, books are now easily replaced by mobile phones and other source of entertainment like games. In recent generations, the amount of people reading books are decreasing, yet reading books benefit our minds more than mobile phones and it could change our way of thinking. Here are some reasons of why people should read books more often.

First, reading gives us information and increases our knowledge. A common example is in school we have a different book for each subject, such as English, mathematics, history, etc. And each type of book have different information written in them that we will learn. We could also apply this useful information in our daily lives too. For example by studying English from books, we know how to write in perfect grammar, or know more verbs, nouns, and adjectives, finally we can speak more fluently since we know the correct grammar.

Next, reading makes us imaginative. This is clearly seen in fiction novels or other artistic books, like poetry. Writers in this specific genres have a habit to describe their characters and scenery in a descriptive way and by reading their texts we can imagine their world and their characters. In fact, research has shown that reading is key to boosting our own mental capacity and creativity. We can create more than what something actually is, or create something absolutely new with our imagination. After all it is as what Albert Einstein said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For while knowledge defines all we currently know and understand, imagination points to all we might yet discover and create.”

Finally, by reading books our minds become more open – minded. This applies to non – fiction books since we read what the writers thoughts on certain topics are, which makes us know their perspective on those topics. By knowing their side, we can broaden our own perspective on things and not just look at the world based on our experience in life. This also applies to self – help books or spiritual books where writers write life lessons to help readers. For instance, a self – help book called “Love for Imperfect Things” by Haenim Sunim discusses about depression, love, family, and many more. The book helps us think more about the world, even beyond our knowledge to guide us in dealing with problems in life.

In the end, those are the few reasons why reading books benefit our minds or change our way of thinking and there are many more. Nonetheless, this does not happen instantly, so instead we should get used to reading books and we shouldn’t be ashamed to read them.
