WORLD WATER DAY 2018
WORLD WATER DAY 2018
This article is dedicated to World Water Day which is celebrated on March 22 every year. Many of you might not have heard this annual event before. So, World Water Day is about focusing attention on the importance of water, that is the importance of universal access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) facilities in developing countries. This day also focuses on advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. World Water Day is actually an international observance day. It is meant to inspire people around the world to learn more about water-related issues, tell others about these issues and take action to make a difference, particularly in developing countries.
One
of these issues is the global water crisis. The global water crisis includes
challenges such as water scarcity, water pollution, inadequate water supply and
the lack of sanitation for billions of people in developing countries. The day
brings to light the inequality of access to WASH services and the need to
assure the human right to water and sanitation.
In
order to finish the problem, there are few things that we can do to help other
people and us too, as citizens of Indonesia which is one of the developing
countries can obtain WASH facilities. First, turn off the tap when you brush
your teeth – this can save 6 liters of water per minute. Then, place a cistern
displacement device in your toilet cistern to reduce the volume of water used
in each flush. You can get one of these from your water provider. Next, Take a
shorter shower. Showers can use anything between 6 and 45 liters per minute.
Consider getting an aerated shower head, which combines water and air, or
inserting a regulator in your shower, which puts an upper limit on flow rates.
Remember to always use full loads in your washing machine and dishwasher – this
cuts out unnecessary washes in between.
Moreover,
if you have a garden, water your garden with a watering can rather than a
hosepipe. A hosepipe can use as much as 1,000 liters of water an hour. Mulching
your plants (with bark chippings, heavy compost or straw) and watering in the
early morning and late afternoon will reduce evaporation and also save water.
Last but not least, try to invest in water-efficient goods when you need to
replace household products. You can now get water-efficient showerheads, taps,
toilets, washing machines, dishwashers and many other water-saving products.
Some
of you might wonder why it is so important to save water. The answer is when we
use less water, we are actually reducing energy use. Cleaning waste water is an
energy-intensive process; so is heating the hot water that comes out of your
taps. We are also saving money. If you're on a water meter, these tips above
could save you a lot of money.
