Everybody knows Post-it® notes. It is one of the simplest yet famous products globally. The start of the well-known Post-it® notes took years and a serial of abrupt yet fortunate events to become evident. In the late 1960s at the 3M company in Minnesota, the United States, one of the researcher’s group had an idea of Post-it® notes quite accidentally. The group of researchers at 3M company was working on developing different types of adhesives, one of which is a particularly weak adhesive. They needed help from the employees working at 3M company, whom they asked if they could think of a use for a particular weak adhesive. Its predominant lead was that it did not get dirty and it could be reused. It was not fruitful. For several years, the weak adhesive was shelved. Workers at 3M company couldn’t think of a suitable and marketable use for the mild adhesive. However, it stayed on the workers’ minds, and years later, their persistence paid off.
In the mid-seventies, a researcher from 3M company thought of efficient and convenient use for the mild adhesive. It started off when his associate was tired of losing his place in a book he used quite often. The researcher proposed an idea of a sticky innovation that could be applied to a piece of paper to be used as a bookmark that would stay in place in a book. Another use was likewise found when the sticky innovation attached to a report as a request for comments regarding the report. Hence, the idea of Post-it® notes was born.
In 1977, the 3M company has arrived at an agreement that there would be a test launch in four American cities. Sales of the sticky innovation fell short, partly because the product was quite unfamiliar. The company gave it a last shot, 3M salesmen arrived at the city of Boise in order to introduce the product and gave demonstrations of the product while concurrently offer free samples of the sticky notes to audiences present. A week later, one of the salesmen returned to Boise and found that a large portion of the office workers showcased vast interest in purchasing Post-it® notes.
Over time, the 3M company comprehended the immense potential of Post-it® notes. Hence, the next few decades a promotion of more than 400 varieties of Post-it® notes – varying in colors, shapes, and sizes – came to light. Today, the use of Post-it® notes has expanded beyond their primary functions as a convenient paper for extra notes or memos and a bookmark for the readers.
